I do really think that of the many routes they could have gone to have someone look after things, Rhino is about as well as they could have done. Thus far, what they've released seems to have been well done (albeit not at the rate people here want to see). Obviously they are in it for the money, but I think Rhino has proven , at least with other artists, they sincerely care about properly preserving and presenting the music. In short, if you're pissed at Rhino, then you're pissed at Mickey, Billy, Bobby and Phil for the same.
... now about all these new shows that keep popping up....

Macro Photography is pretty cool, I had a bunch of stuff I took in the desert of insects and spiders and stuff. . .but lost them all in a move. Oh Well.

i would tend to give Jerry a lot more credit for the courage he has shown in matters of exploration, musical and otherwise

what did GD do when Jerry was their leader?
- started their own record label...for fear of an industry precedent, rec exec's everywhere breathed a huge sigh of relief when the band gave up on the venture and signed with Arista 3 albums later
- sold out large venues via mail order...passing a cut of the savings on to their fans...pissing off ticket brokers to no end
- sang Stella Blue 326 times to x-thousands of rowdy fans
non-confrontational?
i don't think Jer ever once feared that he wouldn't always have a job somewhere in music...sad that he chose to take on the insecurities of the GD Machine

Yeah, non confrontational. The dude had assistants break up with his girlfriends for christsakes. And how about the way he handled the firing of David Kemper?
And I think the whole ticket thing was a group effort on part of the family ( Eileen Law etc. )
I'm not trying to bash Jer by any means. I'm just saying when I hear this arguement that he would have wanted everyone to have everythng for free, I think it's ridiculous. Part of this arguement comes from his unwillingness to really commit himself to the hard issues.

"Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. is a legal fiction, not a working reality. It doesn't represent our real work. Just because we have an office doesn't mean we have to feel we have to be office workers, nor [need we] identify ourselves as a Corporation because we have a corporation.
We need to liberate ourselves from misunderstanding ourselves. We need to protect ourselves from believing that we are essentially a corporate entity.
The reason for this attempt to describe ourselves is to free all the people in our organization from having to feel defined by what is actually an externally dictated fiction of convenience."
- Jerry Garcia
kudos to Rhino if they can ever manage to pull it all together

In any event, put we down as one that has been fully satisfied with my Rhino interactions.

Never sounded better: the underappreciated debut album, the inorganic delights of Anthem of the Sun, and what a flash to get the Birth of the Dead 2-cd set.
Aoxomoxoa, that's one I prefer the original vinyl mix, no comparison to what's officially in print.
Can't win em all.
